Five Ways to Talk with Your Employees about Energy Efficiency

  1. Ask employees about their workplace needs

The chance to solve problems (poor lighting, uncomfortable temperatures, poorly functioning equipment) is a chance to improve and enhance workplace systems for better energy efficiency. It also can lead to a more desirable and pleasant work environment.

  2. Encourage the sharing of new ideas

Your employees are your most valuable business resource. Seek their input. Consider offering incentives for ideas that lead to real savings of energy and money.

  3. Start a conversation

American Idol, The Super Bowl, Paris Hilton; they’re all fine topics for the water cooler, but next time kick off the mid-morning chatter by commenting on your most recent (home) electric bill. Be careful, though; your employees may just carry the conversation right through lunch time!

  4. Do a work-place survey

Create a questionnaire that addresses energy use in your workplace. Use the responses as a basis for a general discussion with employees.

  5. Make it a regular thing

Ask your staff to join in for regular discussions about how to improve energy efficiency at your workplace. Consider appointing one employee as energy director for the company.
